In an article published by thejournal.ie, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Olivier de Schutter, points out that food and nutrition security must be developed in a sustainable way, and that the status quo as exemplified by conventional forms of agriculture, is no longer viable.
He argues instead that sustainable food systems are those that are efficient in reducing waste and losses; they invest in smallholders and in agroecological practices, in support of diverse farming systems that improve the adequacy of diets; and they take into account the specific constraints of women, which they seek to overcome.
